Senator Derrick T. Simmons Chosen for Elite Fellowship

Senator Derrick T. Simmons recently visited Israel on a trip sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation, the non-profit arm of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, where he learned much about international policy and networked with other young leaders.

AIPAC seeks to educate key decision makers on why Israel and the United States must maintain close ties. Israelis live daily with reminders of violent conflicts between the Jewish State and Palestine. The organization identifies and recruits for the trip America’s brightest young political leaders. Simmons visited Israel December 1-8, 2018, during Hanukkah.

“The most important thing I gained from the trip, aside from being in the Holy Land and visiting Biblical sites, was the military and intelligence briefings. They were exceptionally educational.  To hear the depth of the conflict in the region and the security measures that have been implemented and must be maintained to ensure stabilization in the region was mind-blowing,” Simmons said. “Equally important was to hear directly from Jews and Palestinians who live and raise families in the region and listen to their perspectives on reaching a solution. The trip was very enlightening.  I now have a profound appreciation and better understanding of the biblical and historical context of the region.  I will not only read and comprehend the Bible differently but I will also view media and news reporting through a different lens.”

AIPAC empowers pro-Israel activists across all ages, religions, races and political parties to be politically engaged and build relationships with members of Congress from both sides of the aisle to promote the U.S.-Israel relationship and urges congressional support of Israel through foreign aid, joint anti-terrorism efforts, the fostering of a two state peace agreement and the demilitarization of Palestine.

“Israel is a wonderful country full of wonderful people - both Jews and Palestinians - that are inspired to reach a solution through hope, love, and peace, despite their strongly-held religious beliefs and differences.  As an American, as a Mississippian, as a Mississippi Deltan, there is something powerful about being inspired to reach a solution to the many ills of our community through hope, love, and peace, despite our closely-held beliefs, political affiliations, socio-economic and racial differences.”
